5 Reasons Why I Quit My Job!

Hi everyone! It’s me, Ruby…Tori Blush Studio Manager and Lead Artist! I’m taking over the blog on this one to share 5 reasons why I quit my job to become a makeup artist full time! Since graduating with a Bachelors of Commerce, I’ve worked in the financial industry for the last four years, all while assisting Suzanna on countless weddings on the side. In January of this year, I decided to take the plunge and become a makeup artist full time!

1) Following My Dreams

I’ve always had a deep interest in the beauty industry and makeup artistry but would only shared this secret passion with a select few. It wasn’t until I realized that time is unforgiving and doesn’t slow down for anyone that I needed to pursue this dream of mine ASAP! I didn’t want to live life knowing that I didn’t take the risk to do what I loved the most. Thankfully, my loving husband was super encouraging. It also helps when I have a mentor like Suzanna guide and support me through the thick and thin and watch me grow as an artist.

2) Makeup Makeup and More Makeup

Another reason why I became a full time makeup artist is so that I have a legitimate excuse to own all the eyeshadow palettes and lippies that I do. Who doesn’t love shopping for makeup and testing new products? I think that’s the part I enjoy the most about being an MUA. Work trip to Sephora? Yes please!

3) Unleashing My Creativity

All this talk about how I love being in the beauty industry must make you think I hated my last job. Don’t get me wrong – I loved my previous career. My manager was awesome and my job definitely helped pay the bills, but I felt something lacking. I didn’t have a creative outlet at my previous position and there’s just so much I could do to be creative within my cubicle. Now, as a makeup artist, I am free to play with different colours, test different products, and make beautiful faces! I view each client that sits in our studio chair as a brand new canvas, and it allows me to be creative and free and do what I love the most!

4) Great Clients

Suzanna and I boast about this all the time, but we truly do have the best clients! They are all so sweet, nice, and down to earth. I get to meet new people everyday, chat about the latest makeup trends, and learn about my bridal clients’ love stories or how the proposal went down. More often than not, clients become more than just clients; they end up becoming our friends.

5) Tori Blush Studio

Uhm… have you seen our studio? Everything, from the gallery wall to the vintage chairs, has been perfectly curated specifically for the studio. It brings out the girly in all of us! The studio is also the perfect relaxed place to beautify all of our clients, whether it is for their graduation or wedding day, without the hustle and bustle of beauty counters. Our focus is on the client, and making sure they leave feeling confident and beautiful!

I hope you learned a little bit more about me and I hope what I shared inspires you to pursue your own dream career! I’m so happy to have boarded the Tori Blush train at the right time. We are now growing so much that we can’t keep up and are looking for more amazing Lead Makeup and Hair Artists to join our team!

Tori Blush Travels: Seoul, Korea

May 24, 2016

Hello everyone! Ruby here – Studio Manager + Lead Artist of Tori Blush. Earlier this year, I embarked on a journey with my hubby to Seoul, South Korea and wanted to share a bit about my experience there as a makeup artist and what beauty and skincare trends from Seoul are being becoming available in North America.

IMG_8285To most, Seoul is known as a city filled with the most amazing Korean BBQ, fast-paced streets, and catchy K-pop. To me however, Seoul is the hub of all trendy makeup and skincare products. As a legitimate product hoarder (Suzanna can vouch!), it was hard not to hold back from buying one of everything! For makeup and skincare lovers, Myeongdong is the place to be! This is an area of Seoul that’s flooded with major Korean skincare brands, store after store. It’s like Sephora, multiplied by a hundred, spanned over several big city blocks! In the evening, street food carts come rolling out so you can shop and eat at the same time. My kind of Heaven! The exterior design and decor of all the shops are over the top as well, so it’s hard to believe that the skincare and makeup sold inside can be so affordable.

During the days leading up to our trip, I was most looking forward to all the cute and unique makeup products I’d be exposed to. However, as a darker coloured Asian woman, finding makeup that worked for me was a challenge.
BB creams, which are the Asian version of our tinted moisturizer packed with lots of anti-aging and UV protection benefits, are all the rage amongst Korean women. But finding a shade that fit my tanned skin perfectly was impossible. It also didn’t help that the shade selection for most BB creams were limited to 2-3 fair shades, at most! I even tried to explain to a sales rep that BB creams will not work for me when she insisted the fair shade was perfect for my darker skin.

With that being said, it’s clear that women in South Korea fiercely pursued fair skin. Even as my husband and I strolled the streets, we noticed almost every women sported fair dewy skin in addition to straight full brows, and a lightly tinted lip.

Even though I didn’t have much luck makeup shopping, skincare shopping posed a very different experience! They had such innovative and different skincare products, ranging from the sheet masks to serums and cleansers. The packaging was also exploding with cuteness. I wanted to buy everything to compensate for the fact that I hardly bought any makeup!

Of course I had to snatch up a few sheet masks – there was a wide selection to choose from with any brand, each with different scents and skincare properties. The ones I chose had skincare benefits derived from rice, honey, aloe, blueberries, yogurt, and even broccoli!

I also bought some masks outside of the sheet variety. There was an Egg Mousse Pack from Too Cool For School (even the name of the brand is so cute) which foams when dispensed from the bottle and boasts sebum-controlling properties with egg white as one of it’s ingredients. I also purchased a Jeju Volcanic Pore Clay Mask from Innisfree which claims to have volcanic clay from Jeju Island (in Korea) in the mask. Works like a charm on my oily skin!
However, the most shocking and unique product I saw during my trip was Snail Mucin skincare products. Yes, that’s right – apparently snail secretions carry magical skincare benefits such as hydration, brightening and skin cell regeneration for wrinkles and scars. I bought a cleanser, sheet mask, and a wrinkle-plumping serum with snail mucin from The Saem. Perhaps it was the hustle and bustle of the store, or maybe it was the excitement of being in Seoul in general, but when the sales rep applied the serum to a few lines on my hand, the lines disappeared and instantly plumped up right before my eyes!

Overall, I had the most amazing time and would definitely go back again. It was such a unique experience for my hubby and I and needless to say, it was SEOUL MUCH FUN! I now have skincare products to last me for days and am ready to go on my next adventure!

‘Til next time! – Ruby xoxo

Spring Style – Half Top Knot Tutorial

April 27, 2016

We’re dusting off our Tori Blush blog (it’s been a minute!) and starting fresh with a new blog series called Spring Style! Just in time too…we’ve been loving the warmer weather in Vancouver these days!

When we think of Spring Style, florals, denim, effortless hair and fresh make-up come to mind. In this blog series – Spring Style, we will walk you through several tutorials for both hair and makeup to give you a fresh faced and polished look. Be ready to welcome this season with open arms!

STEP 1:

Take a 1 inch wand or curler (you can use a regular clamp iron like a wand too!) and take small sections and wrap around your wand. In this tutorial, I’ve curled the hair to curl away from the face. If your hair curls well, only hold in place for a few seconds – we’re going for soft beachy waves and not tight curls, so a few seconds will do! If your hair needs a little extra loving, hold hair for a few extra seconds. Release hair and do not touch it. We will let the curls cool in this position.

STEP 2:

Part hair equally on both sides. Where you begin your part is totally up to you, depending on your preference. Here I’ve sectioned the hair just above the temple area though this half top knot looks great parted from any top portion of your head. I’ve sectioned the back portion to the top of the crown of the head.

STEP 3:

Put the sectioned hair into a ponytail.

STEP 4:

Using the end of a tail comb, gently lift the front of the ponytail to give a little lift and volume at the front.

STEP 5:

Take your sectioned ponytail and using a tail comb or teasing brush, tease the underside of the hair – from base to tip.

STEP 6:

Once the ponytail is teased, begin to twist it from the base to the tip.

STEP 7:

Begin wrapping the twisted hair into a bun – I usually twist counter clockwise, but either direction works!

STEP 8:

Wrap twisted ponytail until bun is complete and now what we call a top knot.

STEP 9:

Take a few bobby pins and secure the top knot.

STEP 10:

Gently begin to fluff your top knot, pulling out the base and middle sections. This gives the top knot some extra volume and looks more like a cotton puff than a tight bun!
Finally, run your fingers through your hair and loosen those waves!

I hope this simple, yet stylish tutorial will help bring your hair game Spring ready! Show us your top knots by tagging us on our Instagram @toriblushco. #toriblush

Big thanks to my amazing friend Christine Pienaar for taking these amazing pictures and for the beautiful Emily Magowan for being my muse!

xoxo,
Suzanna
